This project stems from my personal relationship with sanitation while living in various New York City neighborhoods across many boroughs. Through data visualization and spatial analysis, I seek to understand the relationship between the city’s sanitation infrastructure and sanitation-related 311 complaints. The project shows where sanitation complaints occur, what those complaints are, and what types of complaints are most common. It also explores the location of the city’s litter baskets, the complaints about them, and the non-basket complaints occurring around them. Finally, the project examines the spatial relationship between the number of sanitation complaints and litter basket placement.
